It is with great sadness that we have learnt of David Clarke’s passing. From a career in Rolls Royce, he joined the Energy Technologies Institute as its outset. His robust, engineering-led approach to tackling energy innovation was a huge asset, and ETI’s achievements and 10 year anniversary in 2017 are testament to his foresight and dedication.
A supporter of Carbon Capture and Storage, of bioenergy, and hydrogen, he was an early champion of a whole-systems approach to understanding which energy technologies were needed in the years ahead, and ETI became a powerful voice to remind ministers they only had a decade to decide which of those technologies should be deployed.
As the UK continues to grapple with these challenges, he will be much missed.
